Help please, my 2002 grand caravan has no heat this morning. It was working good, too good, it has been blowing out very HOT air for the past couple of months, this morning there is a very slight warm up. I let the car run and drove around for a bit..still no heat. Another problem i have had for a while is the fan only works on HIGH. I have 120,000 miles. I want to know what I am talking about when I go to the repair shop..tired of being "taken for ride". Help please. Unsure

Has this been running warmer than usual also for the time you said heat was warmer than perhaps expected?

* Check the coolant is full first both at radiator and the recovery tank.

* If not properly full then you need to locate the leak and fix it and sooner will be better.

The symptoms are consistent with low coolant and or overheating with the info so far,

I did check the coolant, was low. I went to have an oil change and asked them if they thought there was a leak, they were not sure but said i have a trans. fluid leak. filled both. The heat worked on the way and back, but it is still hotter than I think it should be. Also noticed my temp is running right between hot and cold..it goes there immedialty. I have 130,000 miles on this van (I drive alot) and was wondering how much more life to expect. Is this coolant or heating problem common in dodges? I read in another post about transmission problems in these vans. My car has the original. Thanks for your reply and advice. Sorry to ask so much but I commute an hour to school and do not want to get stranded.

Chris,

For now keep coolant full and carry some with you. IDK what the layout of this is - with or without a cap on the radiator so keep an eye on it.

Leaks: Water pump is higher on the list than some other things but could be any hose or anywhere coolant is. What I'm hoping is not a head gasket. If no leaks can be found you hunt to see if that's it. System can be pressure tested to help find the leak.

Also don't really know why your heat is so warm/hot with gauge reading normal - right? Plain dunno. Will the selector lower the temp?

130K on it. That alone doesn't mean it can't last tons longer with care.

Trans leak: Try to find where that's coming from. Alone it means little right now but check it and know how to yourself since it was found low.

Nobody want to get stranded: Read what you need to learn how to check things yourself in the owner's manual. Keep some spare coolant, ATF (automatic trans fluid), a funnel, oil, a cell phone and join a motor club that tows if needed. There are simply things that can happen that all the care in the world can't prevent. Folks ask me all the time "Can this car make it to XYZ place and back" - my answer is always the same - new or old you could break down before you are out of sight in anything! Doesn't mean you should ignore warnings though!
