I have an older Jeep Liberty, this thing is a trooper and has been a great vehicle for quite a few yrs. But about 2 months ago, the A/C started shutting off after about 10-20 minutes and won't turn back on. It ONLY comes on if the car is completely cooled off. If the car is still warm, it won't come back on even if I leave it for an hour. My mechanic said that it was the compressor over heating, but wouldn't that mean that if I turn the AC off for a period of time that it should cool off then be able to come back on? Or is it directly related to the overall temp of the engine?

Nobody is going to know until somebody troubleshoots the electrical circuit to find out where the power is dropping out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The mechanic said that the compressor was over heating causing it to shut off.

OK, if you believe him, go with it, otherwise get a second opinion.

So if the compressor is over heating, wouldn't shutting off the AC cool it off? Or does the compressor over heat even if the AC is off? That just doesn't make sense to me? PS. I came on this forum to hopefully get some "thoughts", but I already got the mechanic "Canned" answer.... If that's how you answer questions in this forum, I'll go elsewhere...

Don't try to hurt my feelings. If you don't like my answer, then you are free to do whatever you want. I'm not there to inspect your car so I have no idea if the guy is pulling his story out of the sky or not. If you're not capable of tracing an electrical circuit yourself, then you need to let someone else do it.
