2001 Durango V8 A/C cuts out above 1200RPM Sign In

2001 Dodge Durango V8 with all wheel drive. Front and rear A/C and heater.

High and low pressure at static is 50 PSI. At normal idle the high pressure is 105 to 115 PSI and the low side drops to about 12 PSI. Increasing the RPM just sllightly and the compressor shuts down, and the high and low sides go back to about 50 PSI.

There is no noise whether the clutch is engaged or not.

Don't know where to start with this one.

Sounds like it doesn't have enough refrigerant but a blockage in the system would give the same symptoms. That's why you should always recover all the refrigerant and recharge with the correct amount and then see what your pressures are.

I thought low freon and/or lots of water or trash in the line. But to cut-out at 115 or so pounds???

How about a defective expansion valve? Would that cause this kind of failure?n

Thanks for the info. I will evacuate the system, maybe blow out a line or two and recharge the system.

I used to get notices of replies, but not now. So, I just logon occasionally to see if there is anything.

Did you send a reply that I missed?

It's a college course to even start with this stuff. Pressures are all whacked as you know. Locked post near top of this section is informative. Leaks are #1 at causing problems. Debris means it's trouble big time. Debris doesn't come from an X valve but rather a failed compressor usually. 134a was OE charge and you need to know it's exact. PAG oils used absorb moisture and become acidic and there goes the whole shooting match.

Takes time but that acid will plain ruin a system - about every part of it. For any reason low charge will starve compressor of much needed oil and then the disaster happens.

Keep in mind that engine heat will raise pressure and it will try to work but self destruct. Safeguards are imperfect to shut system down.

If you go for this go new parts not remans. Trust me. No shortage of expense in this stuff either,

T

You can't have any idea what the problem and the pressure readings mean nothing is until you evacuate and recharge the system with a known quantity of refrigerant.

Right on the $$. Pressures give clues but until you know exact weight of charge is in it you don't know. No contamination allowed. Pure stuff only,

Tom

Re: 2001 Durango V8 A/C cuts out above 1200RPM Sign In

I want to check the high pressure switch, but I'm not sure where the one is on this vehicle. There is a switch in the high line just before the high service port just by the radiator. Do you know if that is the only high pressure cut-off switch...and how to check it?

I assume it would be closed in normal operation up to 450 PSI and open under higher pressure? Is that correct? I have not checked the continuity yet, but that's next before I recharge the system.

As for remans, an A/C guy in south Texas told me he just LOVES reman compressors. He says he buys 12 and gets to re-do 10. He will NOT put a reman in a car anymore.

Apparently you're choosing to ignore our advice so I'll back out of this now. This truck doesn't even have a high pressure switch.
