2000 Pontiac grand am gt overheating

My 2000 Pontiac Grand am GT is overheating and im getting no heat from my heater. I've tried just adding coolant but it hasnt helped. I took it in to the mechanic and he thought i needed a new thermostat but was goin to charge an insane ammount. Could it be anything other than the thermostat? Or should i try and replace it myself?

Guess: Air in system (exhaust gasses) due to blown head and head gasket in the cards??
