2000 Ford F150 Intermittant Overheating Sign In

Hello,
I have a 2000 F150 (263,000 miles). Just recently, when I run the A/C, the temperature gauge will spike after about 20-30 minutes of use. If I do not run the A/C, the temp. gauge stays right in the center where it always has. This problem has just started in the last week. I have checked my fluid level on the radiator and it is full. Any ideas or suggestions on what may be causing this and a way to fix it would be appreciated. Thanks, Don

First you want to determine if it's losing any coolant over time. If it's not losing any coolant, then I would tend to blame the radiator not having sufficient coolant capacity.

It does not appear to be losing any fluid at all. When you say "not enough coolant capacity", I am not real sure what you mean. Overall capacity of the radiator? Coolant having lost it's viscosity over time and needs replacing? I have had the truck since it was new and this is the first time this has ever happened. I purposely drove it yesterday in 90* heat without the A/C on and that is how I determined that this only happens when I am running it. Same thing this morning. It was very warm and muggy, and I drove it 26 miles into work without the A/C and the temp. gauge stayed exactly where it should. Thanks for your help on this!!! Don

Running the air conditioner simply adds more work for the engine. That's why the problem is only showing up then. Not having enough cooling capacity means the radiator has deteriorated to the point that it cannot handle the heat being produced when the engine is working that hard. It should be checked out by a professional but it sounds like it needs a new radiator.
