2000 Escort ZX2 no a/c or heat Sign In

2000 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0 Zetec, DOHC 156,000 miles.

The A/C blows ice chunks for a few minutes then stalls my car. No heat at all. Can not adjust temperature.

I had a cd player installed. A/C and heat worked fine before installation. Only heat worked after install. I replaced the black relay box after being told that is the problem. Still no fix. Eventually the A/C clutch went out, replaced that, then only freezing cold a/c for a few minutes until it makes car stall. I can't change the temperature at all. The knob moves but the temp doesn't. Defrost blows out freezing cold air. A/C lines (the metal ones under the hood) frost and freeze when a/c is on. Please help.

No way to know how that CD player install was butchered. I have to suggest taking it out, put all wires back and fixed properly, spliced and soldered if needed and find someone who know WTF they are doing for installing aftermarket stuff. You can't just poke wires for power + grounds without knowing which is for what or get the interface that makes a sound system just plug into car's existing wiring exactly without hacking it up.

If A/C is empower by mistake and operates when too cold it will - not a maybe destroy it! Unplug compressor for now as it's probable hydraulically locking up and not shutting down when it should,

Circuit City did it. The A/c compressor is working fine. Not locking up or anything after replacing. It has been almost 4 years since replacing it. It has been 6 years since these problems started. I fought with CC for a few years then they went out of business. Is there some kind of guide that I can purchase that tells me what wires belong to what behind my a/c controls and cd player? I would rather do it all myself now. I have yet to find a reputable mechanic in Tampa, Brandon or Riverview that won't try to pull one over on me. After the wiring possibly being screwed up, I don't trust anyone else to touch it. Mechanically, I can do most things to my car, electrically, unless I have a guide I will not touch it. My dad was a mechanic his whole life until he passed in 2004. He taught me almost everything I need to know about fixing a car. Just not about a/c's. Now that he is gone, I have full faith I have finally found what I need... You Guys!!!

BTW, I did purchase the whole set up that all they had to do was take the new wires with harnesses attached already, plug them into my new cd player and plug the other end into the existing wiring for radio. Looking at it, you can tell all the wires leading into harnesses have been cut and soldered. I pulled the black electrical tape off to find that out.

In that this happened right with installation - that so strongly points to something went wrong with doing that. I thought Circuit City did go out of biz but wasn't sure everywhere - at any rate that ends going back. There isn't a way to paint chain stores that do installs all good or all bad. It's always one by one by a tech not the whole chain.
Autozone does offer as you found some serious info for certain vehicles. Regular manuals you might buy are usually not too complete.

OK: Tampa area should NOT have been very cold yet. Laugh (NOT) saw 21.7F here already West of Boston. What happened?

**************

Because heat and A/C controls are so close to "radio" stuff something almost certainly went wrong with install even with the right parts most shouldn't need cutting into cars wiring but it could have been or could have been disturbed. We have two regular tech who volunteer here in FL. Hammer Time is on East side and not sure where " re-tired " the other is by town. We are from anywhere but right now mostly US - all over the place. My guess is " re-tired " may know of a place near you - I couldn't from here.

****************

Heat not right may not be the worst thing in Tampa for now (I've spent a lot of time in FL) but you shouldn't ever be seeing icing lines underhood. By design A/C takes breaks when it's done enough or shuts down when too cold as the refrigerant is a gas that when cold and compressed becomes a liquid at much lower temps than when hot and can choke the compressor. Ice can also be sometimes low refrigerant charge or improper amount.

There are blend doors for heat and A/C electrically actuated so if the wires to those got damaged it may be stuck on too cold which has a second over-ride to shut it down but A/C will normally come on in most all cars when defrost is requested as at a certain narrow range of temp it will dry the air first then heater will overcome any cooling and blow drier air at windshield. It must be totally off at lower pressure and temps and when that cold humidity isn't there anyway.

I don't know what your set up is for CD and not a "stereo" tech but if a separate unit and not a whole new radio with CD in it then it would need separate power - IMO best to use an entire separate wire to fuse box - most have an open unused spot just for accessories both one to stay on for like clocks and memory of presets, and another that would shut down when ignition is shut down.

If this is all some strange coincidence that this happened at the time of an installation I'm sorry if that sends you off on the wrong fix.

Good luck with fixing this and hope there's not any harm done caused by it,

Tom - Marlborough, MA

: If others not reading this post again with brand of what you bought and post it in Stereo section or right up top. Many of us read everything no matter where it get posted..........
