Thanks Tom Greenlief for your response! I took my cavalier to a Midas store today; a group of mechanics that I've done business with in the past and they tried to troublshoot my heat and ac, I also feel like they took me for a ride. Apparently they had my heat and ac working for 10 minutes after they changed the fuse and then it started operating again after they put in a second fuse but this time the heat only worked on high no matter what setting you placed it on (1-4). The AC worked and was blowing cold air. They charged me $42.00 and told me that they believed (that they wanted to start with replacing the switch) to see if that solved the problem. I asked them for an estimate on a switch and they told me they would make some calls and that I should call them in an hour. They also stated that the problem might be a fuse/electrical issue. When I called them an hour later they told me that it was going to cost $425 to replace the switch and since the switch could not be purchased as a part alone they would also have to replace the motor blower since these parts cannot be sold separately--they stated that if you replace the switch you have to replace the motor blower since both are connected. The mechanic told me that there is no guarantee that replacing the parts above mentioned would resolve the problems that I have with the heating/ac in my vehicle. The heat setting and ac worked all day until about 5:30 p.m. this evening when it just all shut off again and a terrible smell (that lasted for a few short minutes) came from the car. I am a single woman and I feel like I'm being taken advantaged of because of it. I am plan to schedule an appointment with a GM.Chevy dealer so that they could run a diagnostic test on the vehicle so that I can be told exactly what the problem is which is going to cost me another $100--just to have the vehicle looked at. That means that after the diagnostics (alone) without just fixing the problem is at a grand total of $142.00! I would appreciate any ideas about where to go with this situation! I live in Upstate New York and winter is coming....FAST!!!! Thx

Hey I understand upstate NY as it isn't far from me.

I'm not sure about this problem and am going to break rules and mention two sites that do nothing but MVAC

www.autoacsystems.com

and..........

www.acsource.com

I'm at both and hope sites can cooperate to answer this problem. Trust it's so, T
