1999 Chevy Tahoe LS 4WD 5.7L-Problem with air flow switch. No matter what the control is set for, the air defaults to floor when fan is turned on. If the setting is on defrost the air comes out of the defrost vent for only about 2 seconds when the fan is turned on. It then gets redirected to the floor. I can hear the actuator motor run and the flaps opening and closing when I change the setting but always as soon as the fan is turned on the air goes back to the floor.Has anyone out there ever had a similar problem? I don't mind working on it to try to resolve the problem but I don't want to buy parts that wont fix it.
Thanks

Pretty sure this is exactly as a Suburban I did battle with last year.

The actuator that controls defrost/panel/floor (usually a default position for the doors to go home to defrost) is near gas pedal on the distribution box. If you can so much as get a glance at it there are TWO rods connected by sprung, buffered connectors with white nylon retainers and springs - both must be there and hooked up. Those are easily broken in the course of service for some items also jammed in there such as PDL remote receiver, air bag whoosy and sheilded by a strong plate.

Can't recall if you can see diddle without taking some stuff off to look but do try.

If those are all there and hooked up and the actuator does turn them against your dial request vs just brain dead 'cause they are broken then I think the conrol selector would be my next guess.

Take a look and let's see if we can peg this and soon. Still cold in lots of places and not a good time for this crap to break,

T

Ps: You should notice there's still a smidge of air for defrost no matter where you select....

Thanks for the info and you're right-its way too cold out to look into it right now. Its about 10 degrees out so I'm going to have to wait a bit.
