1999 S-10 Blazer LT (4wd) 4.3L - no heat Sign In

Long story short -- new motor, radiator, water pump, hoses and the like (all except the heater core), the new motor has about 9K miles on it, and just up and one day no heat -- all this after 1000's of dollars in repair, and I'm being quoted 900$ to replace the heater core, and we're thinking while it might be plugged we can get SOMETHING out of it!

I have been troubleshooting with my dad (900 miles away), but I am NOT a mechanic, and do not protend to be, and I have been told to flush out all the lines (incoming, outgoing) but cannot seem to find some "Idiot proof" (or as near to them as possible) diagrams or pictures to help.

My dad has told me to use some pressure (like at a carwash or a pressure washer, have access to both) and some hot water to flush the lines into and out of the core, etc. but before undoing anything, it would be helpful to have a picture labeling what is what or a diagram that's remotely close. (Can anyone help with this?)

Also, I've been reading the previous posts about coolant levels, etc but there doesn't seem to be a general solution. we did have a previous issue with STOP LEAK (what is this the most evil invention ever?) but it could be what is gunking up the heater core.

I live in a fairly not-so-cold area (Seattle area) but I drive a lot, and with temps down more than usual this year I'd really like my heater to work. The defroster works about 95% of the time, did have a brief issue where it wasn't clearing the window, but playing with the controls (Kicked it all to auto) it fired right off. Letting the system run on auto gives me Slightly warmer air than turning it on all high, but it's still not warm. (I'm still seeing my breath when it's 40-50 degrees outside).

Had some previous electrical "Gremlins" but they seem to have settled with a quick fix on my ground wire and a computer reset. The lights dim a little bit when I first start the vehicle, but after about 5 mins (idle or running) it's back to normal and no issues starting it later in the day (just after it's sat all night).


I have checked all my fuses, and my coolant levels are good.

Thanks for any help you can offer. I will be happy to include any updates, as this seems to be a common issue, and WHO WANTS TO CHANGE A HEATER CORE?! icky.

Call around to some radiator & a/c shops in your area....

There is a new system that is used for flushing plugged heater cores that has had some good success. I apologize I can't tell you the exact name of the system or company that makes it. I just heard about it in passing one day from a rep with a different company and while I made a mental note of it, I didn't get all the specifics other than it "pulses" or "vibrates" the fluid while flushing, which helps break up all the cr*p in the heater core so it can be flushed out...

Using a garden hose and some cleaner does help in some cases but most of the time it won't get enough of the junk out to make a difference but definitely try that 1st, it's always worth a shot and does work sometimes....

Just keep in mind that if a leaky heater core was the reason that stop leak was used in the 1st place then removing it will cause it to leak again.

Keep in mind that this system was only designed to hold 15 to 18 PSI so using any kind of pressure cleaner would not be a good idea at all. I would use no more than garden hose pressure and be careful with that.
