1999 AC & Heat Problem

I have 1999 Honda Civic Ex with 107K miles. The problem with my AC started in Aug this year when I would have to increase the fan speed after driving a little while. The fan would stop working on the first setting and then the second setting and so on, but if I turn off the car and turn it back on everything was working but the problem would just repeat. As I was increasing the fan speed since no air was coming out, I could hear a humming noise from under the glove box. Now the problem seems to be the same with the heat. I initially took it to a repair shop where I was told the compressor went out, and then I went another shop and was told compressor is fine and it's an electrical problem. I am not sure what I should be doing, any advice would be very helpful. Thanks.

Whoa, The blower has nothing to do with the compressor!! You may in fact need work there but it has nothing to do with the fan. Not a Honda freak but most cars use a resistor and most are located in the heater box to control fan speed, this can fail and sometimes work on highest setting only for a while and may quit. It's kind of a dimmer switch for the motor. I suggest you find a place that does MVAC (motor vehicle air conditioning). If you are in the US you have to find a place unless you are in the southwest where shops do this stuff year round. Might a pill to get at but your description was good and I bet that's it. Good luck with the fix - T

Is there anything I could do before I take it to a shop? Are there any specfic questions I should ask to make sure that I don't get cheated?

Print this out if you want. Get to know the tech's name. Introduce yourself, and if still worried pay by credit card which is negotionable later if you have a complaint. Best NOT to tell a tech what is wrong. Give them the room to decide. If you just say what to do you are stuck! Good luck with this - it shouldn't be the world, - T
