Hello, I own a 1998 Ford Taurus with 145,000 miles on it and the air conditioner works, but it's only blowing up top. It won't blow out of the front vents or the bottom ones. Just the top where the defrost blows. How easy or hard would this be to fix? It's cooling my windshield not me! Frown

The mode selection is done through a series of air doors that are operated by vacuum. When there is either a partial or total loss of vacuum, the system will default to either defrost or on some vehicles, heat. Acceleration can also have an effect on the doors for the same reason.

Look under the hood for a small black plastic hose coming through the firewall. Follow it to the vacuum source looking for any breaks, cracks or leaks. Also follow any other lines that branch off because they may go to a vacuum reservoir (storage tank) and a leak there will cause the same problem. Using a vacuum gauge to determine if you have full vacuum at any given point is the best way to find it. You can cut into the line anywhere and splice it back together with a piece of vacuum hose. Find the broken line, you found your problem.

Pretty sure Hammer is right on with this as usual. Find the fault with that line. If a total break can be fixed with rubber hose that fits tight and should be automotive grade hose - not something for a fish tankWink

I've got a similar problem with a 1999 Taurus. A/C blows warm through the vents. If I turn on the defrost I can get cold conditioned air. Switching to A/C after the defrost runs on allows the A/C to blow cold air. Heard a leaf rattling around in the defrost a few months ago now it is gone. Any chance it moved through the system and is blocking something in system alowing warm air in when it is not supposed to; is it a vacuum problem as mentioned in this post; or just a system that needs to be replaced as the shop I took it to said. Thanks
