1998 Chev Monte Carlo heat only works while in park or idle Sign In

1998 Chev Monte Carlo Z34; 3.6L engine; 135,000 miles.

Number one I am car illiterate so please bare with me. Both fans in front of radiator don't run but the power is still connected and according to my dad the fuse is ok. My car heats up fine when I am in 'park' warming it up but as soon as I start to drive my engine temp goes from medium to cool in a matter of seconds (seriously). I lose all heating capabilities unless I'm idle and then the heat will come back on momentarily until I start driving again. I just put in a brand new alternator and battery although to be honest I have no idea if that correlates with the operation of the fans. I live in MN and had this same problem last year but sucked it up. Don't think I could do it again. Also worth noting is that I just lost all my lights on the radio display(rew, ff, vol, tuning, etc.) The time is the only thing that still illuminates but I'm assuming those issues involve burnt fuse.

Thanks and please help

Heat issue:
That should be an easy fix. Engine temp should warm up to ONE pre-set spot and pretty much stay there. This is about a clear cut case of a thermostat that's not closing and simple replacement should be the fix.

Now the car will run at one uniform temp and heat restored. Make double sure cooling system is full when that's done. You probably will notice a sharp increase in fuel economy too!
