1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo A/C Recirculation problem
|
|
|
I had a blower motor issue, as the bushing were wearing out, and the blower motor was making a lot of noise, but everything still worked in all switch positions. I replaced the blower motor with a new OEM one. With the old motor, the recirculation position the mode switch would increase the motor speed above the hi position on the selector switch. With the new motor it no longer does. The resistor is fine, as all four speed positions work just fine. Do you have a schematic that shows how the additional voltage gets to the blower motor from the recirculate switch position?

No, the blower speed does not increase with recirculation. It merely sounds that way because the air intake is being redirected. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I don't think it gets additional voltage in the recirculation mode. The increase of motor speed is due to the change of blower motor intake air coming from either inside or outside the cabin. If you have a hair dryer and you put your hand over the intake or outlet, the motor/fan will spin faster. Same deal with a vacuum cleaner. The intake for recirc may not be a large as the outside intake. Also if something gets stuck on the intake vent on recir, like an envelope, the motor will speed up because there is no resistance on the fan now. The old motor may have spun faster in recirc because it was tired. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Could the problem be with the blend air door? I definitely is not the same as with the old motor.

Were the blower motors the same w or w/o the "squirrel" cage? Meaning if somehow a new squirell cage is now touching something or different somehow it may just sound different?? T

The squirrel cage is the same one that was in it before. I merely put it on the new motor. There is no sound of anything touching in the motor housing.

You should notice vent temp get lower with "recirc" mode selected. If no change it isn't recirculating inside air which is already cooled some so would perform better. Do you have a button for this or part of the selection mode? It may be fine if just a blower motor and you are just used to noise from the old one?? T

More thoughts: Can this cage be put on backwards? Doubt it or you'd be complaining of poor general air flow or worse troubles but some old (I'm old) motors were counter rotating! That would mess up the show if wrong one, T

The squirrel cage can't be reversed but the wiring can which will reverse rotation. I seriously doubt there is anything at all wrong with this car. He's complaining about an issue that doesn't exist.

Agree: It's quiet now so not catching attention like the old one. Those that did counter rotate I think had an arrow on the cage - been ages for those now. I think most of that bull was GM w or w/o factory A/C?? T

Thanks, Hammer Time, for your answer. You were closer than anyone else, and led me in the right direction. It turned out to be the actuator mounting to the door. It had detached itself from the door so it was not changing positions at all. I was appalled at the design for the mounting attachment to the door. There were not even any screws to hold in place, It only had a pin that, I guess, fit snugly into a hole for mounting. I drilled the bracket and installed two screws. Now it can't come off, and works perfectly.. Thank you again.
