A lady friend of mine hit a metal bucket with her car (1997 Ford Taurus) 6-8 months ago right where the air conditioner compressor sits which damaged all the lines running to the compressor. None of the lines were repaired when she had the car fixed. Well she had the belt break on her car this last thursday and I replaced the belt but when I went to start it that was when I discovered the pulley on the air conditioner compressor locked up as it was smoking the belt. So my question is , can I just put another compressor from another 1997 Taurus on the car without the lines (plug the holes) and it last longer or does the freon act as a lubricator to keep the pulley from locking up. Thanks for your help with this as she has no money and I have worked on the car the last 1.5 days just trying to help her out.

Yes, you can do that as long as she isn't expecting to have her air conditioning working. The pulley itself is called a hub. The hub has a ball bearing that is a lubricated sealed bearing and is not affected by the internal parts of the compressor or refrigerant levels. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Jeez DS all of a sudden A/C problems now that all the bad battery issues seem over with. OP - yes, used if pulley is free would do but even used some bucks but would be faster and easier for most. Other is a maybe that you can replace just the bearing either a snap ring or called "peened" in place. Puller should be (??) rentable to get the hub/clutch off which is a must. If that is all a mess forget that totally if it was failed bad enough (probably) no telling what is even usable. If used just make sure # of belt grooves are the same. I don't think 1997 was a problem year for that fool issue was once either 6 or 7 grooves on pulleys which if wrong will shred a belt before vehicle is out of your sight! T
