1997 Escort Blower Motor issue. Sign In

Recently, my blower motor stopped working. I took it out, and hooked it directly to the engine (briefly), and it started spinning very quickly. I then tested the connection that would plug into the blower motor with a Volt meter. As I turned the switch from low to high, the meter read the different volts pertaining to which speed it was on. I know the resistor regulates these volts for the speed of the fan, but it seems as if everything is working correctly..... Please Help!

This is for a 1997 Ford Escort Coupe, engine is 2.2 I believe, and has about 78,000 miles on it.

Perhaps the blower motor isn't getting ground or erratic ground. Test for that and go from there,

How do I test the ground or erratic ground? I myself do not own a voltage meter, a friend has been helping me out.

With the key on & the blower motor connecter hooked up, use a test light or voltmeter & back probe the connecter wires. If there is 12v on both wires, apply a ground wire to the blue/black wire. The fan should come on. If it doesn't there is a problem with the power supply.

If it does come on, disconnect the connecter off the resistor & jump between the blue/black wire & the blue/red wire. Turn the key on & turn the fan switch to the #3 position. If the fan comes on at full speed, you have a bad resistor. If it doesn't come on, you have either a bad control head or bad ground. The ground should be in the area of the resistor...

A bad resistor is the most common problem but it still needs to be checked out to be sure....

No, that's not how it works. The power is a constant 12 volt at all times. It's the ground side that passes through the resister to reduce voltage so if you are seeing voltage drop, then you have to be measuring through both sides of the circuit and the problem may be in the motor or it's connection.

If you plug your blower motor back in, does it work? If it does work, you may have a dead spot in the motor and banging it around may have gotten it working again when you went to hook it directly to battery.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I did plug the motor back in, and it didn't move at all, I tried banging on it a bit, and no response. I'm going to have my friend, who is a lot more able to understand these things, look at this thread, and see if he can understand more of what you guys are explaining here. Sorry, I'm just not very mechanically inclined.

Once I found out what the resistor looked like, and found it's location, I pulled it out and it very corroded. $25 and 45 minutes later, the motor is working perfectly. YAY! Smile
