1997 Chevy Tahoe, 90k miles

Ac doesn't work, the compressor cycles on for about 10-15 seconds. The low side pressure goes from around 5 psi up to 45 then cuts off, instantly drops back to 5, and repeats. Where should I start?

It sounds like your low on refrigerant but this means you have a leak somewhere. you can add some and get cold air but the problem will be back if you don't find the leak and running it low harms the compressor.

The common leak is the compressor's body seals and shaft leaks in many of the vintage. Most came with green UV dye new. Check for oilyness or dye for the likely leak.

As HT said - running low on charge will not carry necessary oil and burn out compressor even if that wasn't the problem! If you charge - don't over do it! More is NOT better so watch your #s and for dual air systems run front only for more dependable #s IMO and observations.

More: If this is an OE Delphi - check out Sanden's drop in clone NEW not a rebuilt if that's the issue. If compressor wipes out it takes out condenser with it so acting fast to fix this will save $$ and headaches,

re charged, but didn't change anything. Didn't find any leaks. Put in a new orifice valve, there wasn't much debris on it. Added new refrigerant, but the compressor doesn't engage. Is the compressor not engaging because the pressure is too low in the system?

Likely but you need to post the pressures?? If you mess this up you will be out some serious bucks!

Like Tom said you are going to have to post the pressures.

Hopefully you didn't blindly add freon and know exactly how much is in the system. I've had bad low pressure cut off switches on those systems that will do what your is. If that is the case & you didn't evac & recharge but just added, then it could now be overcharged...

Yup! Overcharge this or almost any and get ready for the big bang and a second mortgage!
