I have a 1995 4cyl (2.3L) Ford ranger XLT and when I turn the A/C on my engine makes a screeching sound and shuts off. But if I give it gas and turn the A/C on it does the same, but it will keep on screeching off then comes right back on and repeats itself. Also I have noticed my truck idling very low. I do not have a rpm gauge so I can only go by feel on that part.

Please help me with finding a solution!! Thank you!!!

Sounds like your a/c compressor is locked up. If you can't turn the end plate by hand then you will be needing a new compressor and all that goes with it.... To get you thru the winter you could just disconnect the plug from the compressor and that way you'll be able to use your heater & defroster.....

As far as the low idle, get a can of throttle body cleaner and try cleaning out the throttle body & plate 1st and see if that helps....

To add to what has already be said:
If someone that didn't know what they where doing has been trying to add refrigerant to you A/C system, they may have it overcharged. Thus locking up the compressor.
As has been stated before: unplug the compressor connection and see what happens.

True mdaniel: If cold where this vehicle is now best thing if pulley is good is to unplug it at the compressor so it can't engage no matter what the real issue is - probably seized but can't know that and deal with it in warmer weather. As Sidom said, if outer plate of compressor doesn't turn by hand now there's trouble but could be dealt with later.

Side note folks: Don't just go adding refrigerant to systems without a ton of know how and information, real gauges and nothing but pure refrigerant - no sealers or junk and no junk kits sold everywhere that near always cause more problems than they could solve,
