My problem started 3 days ago. While I was driving, I switched from a low fan into a high fan but something happened where I left the switch in the middle of (I and II). Then I noticed what I had done and I moved the slider to one of them. Then I noticed that no more cool air is coming in and my AC button's LED is flashing. Then I noticed that when I accelerate, the engine makes this weird sound like I am over working it. It sounded like a rattling sound and it only happens when the car is taking off while is under the first and the second gear. When it starts to cruise, the sound goes away.
I took it to Midas and they are telling me the AC is not even coming on and the best way to go about it is to spend close to $450 converting this old ac system (R12) into a new system. Yet, when I had him drive the car to see what the noise was about, he couldn't tell me. He assumed that it was an engine problem (I highly doubt it).

It sounds like the A/C compressor may have gone south. Somebody is going to have to track down that sound. It may be the compressor clutch came apart and that would mean it's going to throw the belt soon.

Thank you for replying back.
You had mention this in another thread:
There is an RPM sensor in the back of it that senses clutch slippage and they have a lot of problems with that system. If the sensor signals slippage, the module shuts down and the light starts flashing.
I am taking this to a mechanic tomorrow. I will tell him what you said. But I wanna make sure that this is not a relay sensor problem... like the user: XEV CLEO had in the other thread?

I can't tell you that. I'm not there. The RPM sensor itself doesn't make noise but a locking up compressor will trigger the RPM sensor.

What's the best way to go about presenting this problem to a mechanic? Just tell him everything I have told you or get technical about it and quate whatever you have said?

If he's a real tech, you don't have to tell him anything except the A/C doesn't work and there is a noise. He'll take it from there.
