'03 Santa Fe serp belt smoking compressor or clutch? Sign In

I was driving and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I stopped and could smell and see my serpentine belt smoking. When I started the car up again, it began smoking immediately so I turned it off again. After 10 minutes, I turned off the a/c and started the car again. This time no smoke. As long as I don't run the a/c, I'm golden. I did notice this morning when I got up that I could turn the a/c on and get cold air without the belt smoking or screaming at me. Does anyone think I may only need an a/c clutch or do you think it got too hot and welded itself to the compressor shaft and I just need to replace the whole enchilada? Any help would be appreciated.

I think the whole enchalada, how much do serpentine belts cost and how many are you willing to replace? Gets expensive. Might have been a one time thing but have it checked.

You've got bigger problems than that. Your A/C compressor is locked up. When this happens all the metal piece get lodged in the next component in the system which is the condenser. You going to have to replace the compressor, condenser, accumulator and orifice tube just to repair the damage and then your going to have to find the reason the compressor failed in the first place and repair that.

Well, I figured it wasn't going to be good. Thanks for your help and quick responses. I may have to go without a/c for a while. But hey, the good news is I live in Florida and it's the middle of summer! Frown

Guess Mass is too farWink. Do unplug and tie away the plug to compressor till fixed. It can click on with defog, defrost request unless disabled now and belt won't take much of a locked up compressor,
