02 caravan ac not cold Sign In

Hi, I have a 02 dodge caravan with a 3.3, the car wasnt blowing very cold air, so i added a can of freon. But i hasn't helped, if I rev the motor a little it seems to blow out a burst of air/freon out of a relief valve on the compressor. Compressor seems to cycle every few seconds, i'm not sure if the compressor would be going out or if it would be something else? I haven't seen any leaks anywhere. Thanks in advance, jason

It will be soon now that you have overcharged it. You need to shut it off and get it to a professional for diagnosis before you do a lot more damage.

I understand that it may be overcharged, but why woud it be acting this way in the first place?

You'll find that out when it gets diagnosed properly. Not many people can diagnose A/C problems accurately after a complete inspection. You certainly won't find an accurate answer from anyone online with the information that you have. Get it to an A/C specialist.

Thanks for the advise hammertime(lack there of), after reading other posts, it seems that all you can really say is take it to a pro. You don't have any real insight or descent possible things to start to suggest, if you don't want to offer advise don't be on here. If the only way for you to diagnose the car is to see it and have pressure readings, if we all had those a/c tools to use, people probably wouldn't be on here asking for a little help. Being as you are a highly skilled a/c mech, you have prob seen or heard it all. I would think that if you had the extra time to be on here, you would have some great advise.

Here, you'll have better luck with this.

I just hope you don't really hurt yourself or somebody else by messing with something that you shouldn't be. You've already made one serious mistake.

Your right , after your insightful inputs, I might have a better chance. You may want to come down off your high horse if your gonna be on this website to offer our infinite wisdom. Why, is pinned at the top of this section, asking for as many details about the problem, what you have tried, known symptoms and vehicle details, if all is gonna be said is take it to a shop. I understand that you must only have a certification on a/c hanging on the wall, if you really don't know what your doing please don't reply. ok pumpkin

Yep, I'm going to stop wasting my keystrokes. Maybe I'll jump over to another forum and see if I can learn how to do a heart transplant online. What the hell, that sounds easy.

Re: 02 caravan ac not cold Sign In

He's actually right. If you are using a DIY kit to charge your system, you really don't know how much refrigerant is actually or was in the system.

The system pressures both high and low side needed to be checked before doing anything. An experienced technician can look at the readings and get an idea what is going on in the system.

The refrigerant also have to be charged by weight and not pressure. You'll have to take it to a shop that can recover what is in the system and then charge it to the correct weight. They have the equipment for that. Then they can look at the pressures and see what is going on with it.

If you overcharge the system, you'll damage the compressor from overheating and the ac system performance suffers and so does your wallet. Just because an ac system isn't blowing cold doesn't always mean its low on refrigerant.

Re: 02 caravan ac not cold Sign In

Everybody thinks all we have to do is wave a magic wand. We didn't need any of the $100K in test equipment we paid for and there is no need to spend hours troubleshooting a problem. We should be able to do our job from our couch, right? We can use mental telepathy to get all the diagnostic data needed to determine what is going on.

Re: 02 caravan ac not cold Sign In

There are a lot of DIYs out there, HT. Most of them probably don't really understand the workings of what they are trying to fix or even have the proper equipment or knowledge to troubleshoot something like that. I find it frustrating because I want to help them solve their problem, but without some data or pertinent information to formulate a diagnostic plan, you might as well plug in the crystal ball.

Most of the time you do give them information on how to check something and they never come back with any feedback. That can get a little frustrating.

All that can be done is point them in the right direction and possibly give them some education in the process. Maybe its possible that we might actually save them money and heartache in the long run.

The reason I do this is because maybe I am doing something good for someone. Plus it makes me feel good when a problem does get solved. Also keeps the brain sharp...unless you had too many drinks...Crazy

Re: 02 caravan ac not cold Sign In

I do it for the same reason but I have some strong opinions about DIYers and A/C repairs. There is far too much danger and risk of damage to the system but everybody thinks they can do it. I'm in South Florida and have worked at shops that are exclusively A/C. I'm constantly correcting jobs done by someone else where they just made things worse. Unless someone here seems to have strong understanding of A/C and has the right equipment, I'm going to advise them to leave it alone.

Re: 02 caravan ac not cold Sign In

Ditto - A/C is rarely a DIY thing. Not sure it should be at this site. You choked it for not knowing WTF you were doing. Cost? Perhaps thousands to save a buck - NOT good and not safe,

Tom
