xterra trade in value: matchd vs. mismatch door Sign In

hi all-
would really appreciate unbiased advice:
have a 2002 nissan Xterra and just got into a fender bender where driver rear door is going to need to be replaced. the estimate to get it fixed ranges betw. 12-1300 up to 18-1900, the difference being whether just any ol' nissan xterra door is pulled from a junkyard vs. getting any ol' door and painting it to match the color of my xterra.
given current economy, gas prices, etc; I'm in favor of getting rid of it; my thoughts are that I'm not going to get $600 'more' if I trade in or even sell the car to someone w/ a mismatched door as opposed to paying the full price and then turning around and selling it..
its got 80K miles and a recently replaced head gasket, etc so mechanically is sound, and the repair would make it 'structurally' sound, just that I'm very pessimistic they'll be able to find at a junkyard the exact color xterra as what I have (kind of a maroon=ish deep red).

kind of rambling . sorry: in essence- ESPECIALLY if I want to use this xterra as trade in to buy another used car from dealer, do you think it is worth it for me to pay full price and get it fixed up 'pretty' - will I get really 500 more dollars in trade in value vs. just getting the thing FIXED w/o matched door paint and still trade in at the dealer?

if not a dealer, I'd really think that when selling to an individual its not going to be a 5-600 price differential, right?

I've not yet looked on KBB but I've also heard thats a bit of an 'idealized' price range and not the reality of what can be expected for trade in- re-sell value... much less do I know where to look on how much [less] value this would be w/ a mismatched rear door..

thanks for any advice,
Brent

If it's safe and driveable just trade it in the way it is and let them deduct for damage. New or used parts may matter - either new or used would require repaint to match car. New doesn't come painted nor do all come as complete doors - some you just get the outer skin or however they are available. New - you still swap over the guts inside that are good if good.

A good used door completley repainted for the age of the vehicle is an appropriate repair. I think I see what you are asking and the quality of the work counts as much as the quality of the used door IMO. You won't recover the $ at all to fix it to trade to dealer who will fix it their way. No pun intended but you take a hit for a damaged car vs one that was never damaged. At 80k - IMO this is not a "Glitter" lot car anyway so you'll just get a low wholesale price deducting for damage,

Re: xterra trade in value: matchd vs. mismatch door Sign In

thx for the comment. I should have elaborated: the damage is significant enough (the beam between the front and rear door is bent) that trading it 'as is ' I think would be entirely an exercise in futility - the beam needs straightening, otherwise the door(s) will leak... so I think as is its nothing short of junkyard bound (or at least thats what the dealer woudl tell me, and make me pay to give it to them :-P)

Indeed, I'm not even considering buying a new door because it would be even more expensive, (even with or w/o the paint job) ; I was just told that getting a used door 'as is' vs getting a used door and painting it, is that 600 cost differential I mentioned.

I guess my thoughts are if I could even get ~1000 in trade in on it, if it had mismatched (used) door, then I'll have 'broken even' and thats good enough (well, really I'd need to get ~1300 but I'm not optimisitic).. but I dont' know anything about used car costs.
if even trying to sell to an individual, w/ the xterra repaired, but given hi miles, obvious 'injury' [because door is mismatched] I can't get 1000 then it seems I'm better off keeping it and driving it to death (150K miles or more, sounds like nissan engines when properly cared for last a while).
the downside is of course gas mileage, which is why Im' more interested in unloading it if possible.

thanks again,
Brent

Re: xterra trade in value: matchd vs. mismatch door Sign In

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "mismatched" in this case. Seems the original door is history so it's a fix up job no matter what you do - that car is marked or should be - perhaps not down to "salvage" but a record of the damage should be made available to future buyers for them to decide - that can get covered up.

The bodywork should give you back the vehicle, all color matched, ckean of whatever dust was made and inspected for it's safety. That column that's not straight will probably be straightened vs a new or various new panels welded in - all work that marked up the metal should be restored to it was and soft parts too - like door rubber and whatever else got damaged. $1,300 sounds very optimistic but this doesn't sound like an unfixable wreck and probably not near totalled.

I'm not a collision repair person but deal with plenty of it. Well fixed damage can be just as good as if it never happened - it's the cut corner work that gives the work a bad name with stuff showing up later -like water leaks, rust where it shouldn't be and other misc problems but a back door is a lot less likely to cause monster headaches thruout the vehicle than a good hit on the front that also deploys airbags.

Sounds like you really can't drive this now and shouldn't.

For goodness sake the car dealers are starving right now - my guess is they'll talk and deal right now just the way it is! If insurance is involved you can transfer that to go with the car - or the estimated amount aggreed on or whatever works out best for you. Dealers will wholesale or keep trade-in cars depending on condition and what type of dealer they are. New car dealers frequently keep the top dog trade ins and fetch the higher prices too. This would be wholsaled out - fixed and end up on the used car market - fixed.

Call local dealers now if you are thinking of something else anyway - trust me they'll talk if you are a real buyer,

T

As always - your call but the cheapest thing is usually to fix and keep a car with the damage you describe IF YOU still like the car and are happy with the care it has had over the years
