why does my fuel pump keep breaking (mechanical)? Sign In

My Dodge Ram 50 (87') 2.6 fuel pump has gone bad. I bought a new one, [this is a mechanical pump btw as opposed to electric], and installed. The truck fired right up. About five minutes later the truck stalled and I took the pump off finding that the arm on the pump had broken.

I replaced again because that pump was on warranty and the same thing happened again, Pump Lever broke in half. My hunch is that the spacer was making the pump break. The original did not have a spacer and both of the aftermarkets had a spacer and said it must be installed. The pumps seemed to be a very close match to the original so I am thinking that the spacer may be trashing it.

Suggestions? Anyone heard of this happening before??

Guessing only? Where was this spacer? I can't find one (not unusual) but a pic showed 3 different gaskets - thickness maybe? Exactly where did the arm break?

The spacer is about 1/4" thick.

Additionally, there are two gaskets which I put on both sides of the spacer.

(Mine was plastic but this is it)

This stinks as I never ran into this which alone means little. Any chance there are TWO spacers now on it as you mentioned it looked right without it?

What was the fault if other than a common leak or not pumping with the first one you replaced? Do you still have it?

Sorry - all questions. Others here may have run in to this issue??

Well I am guessing that this problem is not common. The last pump had damaged diaphram and was not working however the lever was fine.

It was not leaking, and it was not pumping. I disconnected outgoing hoses and got nothing.

Within the next week I will replace the pump again w/o spacer and see what happens.
