Ok: A bearing sound, belt sound, brake sound, steering noise - help us help you sport. There's only 10 Zillion parts of a car! Standard shift or auto - keep going........

Ok: You can feel it in the steering which adds info. Yes automatics do have bearings that could do this but for now I think possibly a front wheel could also. I'm not there hearing/feeling it so it's hard from here.

If the noise changes when brakes are applied or with cornering it's more likely a wheel issue caused by the different forces vs steady driving or acellerating.

PS pump can make noise - usually you would find fluid low and that's not so aggrevated by slowing down.

Can you make the noise go away completely by any action?

The trouble with some noises is they can transfer thru the car and while you think you are sure it's from one end or side it turns out to be from the other - just the way it is.

There are u-joints that will make noises and or vibrations but I wouldn't call their common failure noise a whining.

So see if fluids are all properly filled and note anything that can either cause the noise or make it go away if it will.

I topped up all fluids yesterday. Whining is louder when slowing down from a higher rate of speed cant really hear it when coming to a stop.Brakes dont seem to affect it.

OK: I'm thinking this is like the "normal on standard shift cars" noise you can hear in reverse when they go some distance they give a whine.

Automatics don't even do that so much in reverse.

At any rate - if it's that kind of sound with what is a drivetrain that is slowing down the car the load is reversed from steady or accelerating. Rear differential pinion bearings can do that with positive or negative forces and I suppose a bearing in trans could as well. The rear diff issue is more common to me and it could transfer that noise such that it fools you as to where it comes from. Less apt to be felt in steering though??

It may serve you well to just allow a trans shop or any you like to test drive it for a diagnosis. From there decide on if you want to tackle it yourself or find a shop depending on what you find.

BTW - there's gear oil in that rear diff that should be checked too. It's one of those things you check every once in a blue moon and for a 1979 the blue moon is here. No dipstick on those - it's a 3/8" square hole in plug part way up the side towards the driveshaft - when removed like with a ratchet and extension works, you just put your finger in there and if oil is present at that level that's about all you can do. Vehicle needs to be level for that check.

I'm trying - this is hard to nail down and so far I do suspect the trans itself but that's not conclusive by any means. A professional opinion with a test drive would be worth it IMO,

Thanks for your advice. I will check rear end for gear oil. If its the trans will it have to be removed to fix a bearing?

Good luck with checking the gear oil. I think you'd see oil all over the place if it was way too low and the level is not so likely this noise but do check it.

I can't think of any shaft bearing/bushing at all in the automatic that would NOT require removing the trans and chances are if it takes dismamtling it a rebuild is or will be suggested,
