I had the front brakes done on May 29th. Only drove the car on local roads at fairly low speeds until three weeks ago when I started a new job and started traveling on Parkways and turnpikes at higher speeds. On July 2 while driving 55 miles per hour my right front wheel just rolled off. Dealer says it is not his fault. There is some rust on the rotor. Please advise. If front rotors and hubs have rust then tightening the wheel could be against rust flakes and NOT truly tightened but that about always makes the brakes shake when applied. I'm guessing that the lug nuts fell off but you didn't say. It's a mechanic's nightmare to make sure things are right before you get the car back. Generally right side wheels don't fall off as the rotation of the wheels tends to make the lug nuts tighten. The used to make reversed threaded lug nuts for the left side of many cars for just that reason. It's not impossible for a right to fall off but much less likely. The problem probably belongs to the last person to have the wheel off but near impossible to prove. I do know of someone who did win in court over something like this. All I will say is that the dealer’s choice of excuse is not a valid one. If there were dirt, rust, corrosion anything on the mating surfaces of the rim and brake rotor. Why wasn’t it cleaned during the course of the repair??? Like what Tom said they may have properly tightened the wheel but if there were foreign material on the mating surfaces it will allow the wheel to eventually work itself loose. It has happened to me. On the other hand your vehicle has not been under lock and key for the last month now has it. Some people will attempt to steel the pennies off of a dead mans eyes. Who’s to say that this wasn’t what happened; that someone was attempting to steel your wheel didn’t succeed but left the wheel nuts loose??? I know it sounds far fetched but it happens and if you decide to take this further; you are going to have to prove that it didn’t. Like I said no win situation; just be thankful that no one got hurt. Go and talk to the dealership again and see if they’ll help with any of the damages. Shake hands and add this to one of your life’s experiences. Dan.
