what is the most expensive car part to repair?

hello,
I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to cars so I was hoping someone could help me out with a couple of questions.
what are the most expensive parts of a car under the hood?
also, how easy or difficult would it be for a laymen to remove the engine from a car?

Parts and repair costs vary widely by type of vehicle. In general whole engines and transmissions are expensive but many repairs to them are not. Generally, removing an engine is not DIY friendly,
