my 1997 vauxhall vectra 2.0i has a problem and i have a question.why when the auxillery belt snapped for the power steering,alternator etc why would a loud tapping noise start inside the engine ? both happened at exact same time.the noise has nothing to do with the timing or tappets as both was done oct last year.i am puzzled by this.im waiting on the new belt.just need to know whats going on in there.can anyone help ?

Is this belt separate from any timing belt? I think so.

When belt broke - you lost all the things it drives - most likely including the water pump and would overheat fairly quickly if you didn't shut it right down. Assorted damaged up to severe can happen with overheats.

Then the question is if there's a noise still now you replaced the belt but you didn't say if an accessory pulley of any kind was the cause and should check for that. That might be the noise,
