First do it myself oil change for 2008 Subaru Outback, 2.5 with 24k; May never try it again! Oil filter on so tight that it literally came apart. Just as I logged in, hubby able to get it off, I am embarrassed to say how many hours we were at it! Any one have any special tool to help with this. It was a certified subaru filter, and filter wrench just spun around on it. I did take a picture of what was left just before we got it off, if anyone is interested.

Hey - There are several types of oil filter wrenches/tools to help. The real trouble is that it was either or both put on too tight or without a smear of oil on gasket the last time.

Many OE filters are fussy about that and can even leak if too tight! Anytime, but especially when one gives you a hard time make sure the old gasket is completely removed and ready for the new filter. Near all oil filters come with instructions on how to tighten them.

Hey - If you want to post a pic of the mess of the old filter please do. Fun for archives........

Dittos on Toms answer. A little fresh oil wiped on the flat o-ring seal where the filter mates to the block is common practice. Most filters are spun on hand tight. I would agree that the last oil change person had the filter on way too tight. I worked on an old car for someone once where the filter was on so tight (so long) that I simply punched a screwdriver through the old filter for leverage to spin it off. Also as Tom mentioned be sure to check that the mating surface on the block is clean of any debris and/or pieces of the old seal before putting the new one on so it will seal properly and without leaks.

Bottom line..You did it! Maybe you will want to continue to do it yourself so you won't have the potential of having someone else overtighten the filter next time as well.
