too much oil? /what damage can it cause? Sign In

i have a 2001 chevy s-10 4 cylinder with 72k miles. i get the oil changed every 3k miles or so at the same location. when i took it in for the oil change this past time i heard the clerk say " 7 quarts of oil!?!?" after this change the paper work states 7.5 quarts of oil.
i know that the engine can only take about 4.5 quarts. i am now wondering what kind of damage this can cause to the engine? the truck goes into the shop on tuesday for major repairs that i feel are a direct cause of the oil changes and too much oil.
i am looking for as much feed back as i can get as i am thinking of taking action against the oil change company for the repair costs.
hope to hear from many of you on this.
thanks Tony

Also want to know what work is scheduled and what the diagnosis was for that. If you know this takes 4.5, heard 7 qts mentioned, and paid for 7.5 and have been doing this every 3k at this same place why the heck didn't you bring that up right then and there?

3 quarts overfilled is definately over the limit. How long did you drive it this way?

they are replacing all of the seals and gaskets in the top half of the engine, from what i understand from the manager at the shop.

i did not realize that 7 quartz of oil were being used until after the last oil change on 8-15-08. prior to that only "upto 5 quartz " have been used. i checked my p[aper work back to 10-01. i am missing the paper work from the previous oil change to which the clerk made a comment about. soit has been two oil changes with too much oil. i have been using this same place for over 5 years wioth no problems until now. my only clue was the clerks comment about 7 quarts of oil. so i drove for just over 3k miles before the next oil change which was just 2 weeks ago.

on 8-15 i took it in for an oil change and for them to check why it had been randomly smoking out he tail pipe. (the smoke came at varying times no one situation caused the smoke .) they told me they could find no reason but it may be the head gaskets, so we'll keep an eye on that. about a week later i pulled into work with smoke coming out the under side of the hood. i popped the hood to find the radiator had sprung a leak and i got that repaired at the same shop.

what i really want to know is what kind of damage can too much oil cause. i'm having the work done on tuesday morning regardless but i still want to know if the oil change place over filling the engine could have caused this damage. i will post the repairs when i get the truck back if that will help any.

i got this response from greatautohelp.com

" Hello and welcome. It is possible that too much oil caused high crankcase pressure which can cause oil leaks past seals and gaskets, because too much oil will cause it to foam up. Usually oil overfull will cause engine to run sluggish, possible cause bent pushrods, oil fouled plugs, smoke out the exhaust. But i dont see how it could cause coolant leaks. Thanks and hope we helped ! greatautohelp" this is about waht the manager at northwest told me . so the coolant leak ... ok it was a radiator leak, that i took care of , but the rest.....

Arggh! Have the quantity of oil that comes out measured and documented. The extent of potential damage is not such an exact science with an overfill situation. You suggest this has been going on for some time but really don't know that do you?

Oil fill levels need to take into account the sloshing of oil in the pan or level when at an angle from accellerating, stopping, turns and parking spots. Note that all instuctions say to check oil on level surface. Almost any automotive engine will tolerate a quart up or down IMO without a problem. Noted: You are mentioning THREE but that's unmeasured and thought to be twice now or 6,000 miles or so.

When you noticed smoke coming out tailpipe that is consistant with engine oil overfilled. This may happen right after a stop or hard turn when oil sloshed especially. Crankshaft is NOT supposed to splash in oil in all automotive engines I know of - some basic "lawnmower" type engine do count on "splash" for oiling.

Crank touching oil in oil pan would violently splash with extremes tossed at bottom of pistions. Smoke and assorted severe damage would be possible.

NOTE: There is no warning light I know of to indicate an overfill. Vehicles with a "Check Oil" light still should be checked manually by dipstick periodically. When an oil change is done it's protocol to check that it's proper by the dipstick EVERY TIME YOU CHANGE OIL! Any owner's manual will suggest checking oil when oil has had some time to return to crankcase. When changed the engine must be run to fill the new oil filter to achieve an accurate reading when just changed.

You tell me........ The only time you checked underhood yourself was when you noticed smoke from underhood which turned out to be a radiator leak and in all fairness not likely caused by an oil overfill. You made no mention of checking the oil yourself which is one of the first things people do when anything is wrong? Do you ever check you own oil level?

~~~~~~~~~~~
I admire your adherence to the 3,000 mile suggested oil change intervals. Many don't do that. That should be bolstered by checking your own oil level periodically and not counting on the vehicle to advise you to do so.
The shop that changed the oil that somehow didn't take notice of a 7 qt fill which is used in some vehicles is alarming.
If this truly was overfilled and smoke was noticed out tailpipe the problems will likely be more than meets the eye. This could also cause early cat converter, o2 sensor failures and unknown engine damage that may not show up right away.
Document what you can. At best this is no fun,
T
