1984 Pontiac, trans am 305 stock v-8, 184K miles.
I am replacing the timing chain and gears. took out the old and after lining up the marks on the gears. went to replace the gears and when they were not exact my son turned the crank several times and now my question. How can find where the cam is in relationship to the crank before i put this back together?

The cam gear and the crank gear will each have a 'dot'. The cam gear dot should be exactly at 6:00, the crank gear dot exactly at 12:00.

I have both alignment markers there however, the number one piston is not at the top and the rotor on the distributor is not on the number one spark plug wire. how much of this does not matter?
