timing belt alignment

i have replaced my timing belt and i can not get the allignments. i have a 98 ford escort, dohc, 2.0 engine. on one ohc i have a single white dot (rear) and the other ohc i have 2 orange dots, that those 2 dots are at like a 30 degree angle from the center of the cam. please help soon, i have to start work again later this week.

With this engine you don’t rely on the painted marks on the cam gears to time the engine. There are locating slots on the camshafts at the opposite end from the gears under the valve cover.
You bring both cams to TDC install a machined flat bar into the slots to hold the cams in position. You then loosen the cam gears so that they’ll float on the camshafts; the cam gears are not keyed in position. Install the belt with the crank at TDC, set the belt tension and then tighten the camshafts center bolts.
Actually there’s also a locating tool that is inserted through an access hole in the block to locate the crankshaft but you can usually get away without using that one and just use the notched marks on the crank.
Oh yea these engines are real fussy about their timing; if not set 100 % you could bend valves or constantly be chasing service engine soon warning lights and trouble codes.
Get yourself a repair manual and the locating tools read and understand them before you go any further.
Here’s a diagram showing the locating tool installed on the cams.
