how do i set the timing on a 98 1.8 mazda protege

You have to jumper the DLC #1 connector terminals #10 and ground, to put timing at base; which removes the computer’s ability to automatically change timing.
Bring engine up to normal operating temperature, turn engine off, connect timing light & install jumper wire. Start engine & allow to stabilize; then check timing.
9-11 degree @ 750rpm; if not within spec, loosen distributor’s hold down bolt & adjust by rotating distributor.
You’ll find DLC #1 on the left inner fender close to the under hood main fuse block.
