sway bar bushing bolts? Sign In

Well I recently purchaes a 1988 gmc 1 ton truck that needs a little TLC. The front sway bar is completely missing. I just picked up a sway bar at a local yard and would like to install it this weekend. The question is what size are the bolts that attach the bushings to the frame. Are these metric? The thread are there. Just need to get some bolts. Would I use just grade 5 bolts?

Guess: They are SAE sized for '88. That chassis dates way back. If threaded holes are there and intact just check with a tap and die set's tool that counts and measures threads. Yes - use hardened bolts at least. Pins at the ends come in assorted grades also and that's more important for strength than the pivot bushings IMO,

just a thought. since the swaybar you took off of another truck probably has some good mileage on it those bushings might be worth while replacing. contact your local parts store and see if when you order new bushings if the bolts come with it?

and like tom said, you can check with a tap for the thread, which also will help because since those threads have been exposed to the elements for some time it will be rough going threading the bolt in.

or you can eye ball it and goto your hardware store and get a selection of bolts. they are cheap and youll always find a use for the extras if you dont want to return them
