My 2000 1.8T Jetta's engine died on me driving home the other day. It only has 70k on it and has never let me down before. The battery shows no sign of weakness an is only 3 months old. The starter spins freely when the ignition is turned. Could figure it out if it was only one or the other but not sure since both happened.

Check this link for more info - it's a mile long but the 1.8 uses a timing belt which probably broke!

That link explains more than you may need to know about it but do know that if the engine spins by starter and feels like no compression the belt may have broken. Some engines are "interference" engines and will cause severe damage if that happens and some survive it ok - dunno on this exact one.

Other possible issue: Starter may somehow have lost it's ability to engage and turn the engine but humms away. Right now that doesn't explain the engine dying out on you but a broken belt would.

Ok: If you've never replaced the rubber timing belt than it's overdo by time alone and close by miles and still overdo.

Even if done it could have failed in some way but your description really sounds like that is the issue. Pray it's not an interference engine if so,

T
