1999 jeep wrangler 2.5 liter 161,000 miles when performing an oil change, oil leaks onto the starter motor when taking off the oil filter. can this damage the starter motor?

Maybe? Not the answer you wanted but starters and other electric motors are tolerant of dust, splashes of water but don't want to be immersed in anything. I'd try hard to use a plastic shield to minimize that from happening, T

Although it's pretty messy, I really doubt any of that residual oil ever gets inside of the starter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Agreed - I don't recall taking one apart and finding it full of oil despite being placed where they get messy. However for those who take starters apart for repair you find that fine paper/gasketing on body to ends of the motor don't give me a lot of confidence. I usually paint with liquid Neoprene (brush in cap liquid electrical tape!) over those while clean and never had a problem. If in this starter's life it's been thru the remanufactured game there's no telling how well it was sealed up. Here with corrosion being an issue I will spray light rust proofing on the studs and eyelets as when they are toast you can't even remove the wires without snapping the studs all off! Seems silly but there are more problems sometimes with LACK of a greasy engine then one that's bone dry sometimes! T
