i have a 1986 honda accord sedan that has suddenly developed a squeaking problem.its usually when i start driving and once i step on the brakes a couple times it goes away.this problem is usually on and off as iam driving.we checked out the front brakes which still had about half the pads still on it,so that didnt seem like a problem.how far must the pads be worn before that safety noise starts on the brakes?any other idea what it would be? thanks

cadogan; Dust accumulation on the pads can make a terrible noise. Also, worn hardware. Remove the pads, clean them (you can lightly sand the surface with emery cloth, then clean everything with Brake Kleen or denatured alchohol), and replace the hardware. You can purchase a hardware kit (very inexpensive) at most parts stores. There is also an adhesive that can be applied to the back side of the pads, which will help. Again, available at the parts store. Assuming the pads are okay, and the noise is coming from the brakes, what you are hearing is actually a high-pitched vibration. If the rotors are glazed, it will also help if you have them resurfaced. Now, at this point, all that's left is replacing the pads. You can use your own judgement once you get them off as to whether or not to replace them, now.

cadogan: All the things Loren suggested AND I'm asking if you have looked at rear brakes or are you sure noise is front? Still should pull "drums?" and clean those too. {Don't quote me but I think it takes two 8mm X 1.25 pitch bolts to pull those drums}

Take a good look at the front pads for spider web cracks too. Man can they make noise when they feel like it.

A fav for brake parts and high claims of staying quiet is the Centric brand. I hope they are still what they were. Dang companies are forever buying each other out so this year's fav may show up as another brandMad
