My '93 Ford F150 has a 351 V-8 and recently started running so rough it was not driveable. I had driven it the day before and it was fine and the next day when I started it up it was barely running. I had no idea what was wrong with it so I changed the disributor cap and rotor, put new plug wires and plugs in it and while it helped somewhat it still runs very rough. What I did see that I hadn't seen before was an accumulation of oil around the front spark plug hole on the driver's side and white smoke coming from the hole after a short test drive to see if what I had done so far had helped. I'm not a mechanic at all and have no idea what I'm faced with. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The old plugs, were there any that were wet or heavily carbon up?
Can you determine which cylinder(s) are not running or running weak in comparison to the others?
An easy way of checking this is to bend a plastic coated metal twist tie (twist ties that are used to close plastic bags) into a U shape. Remove the spark plug wires at the distributor cap. Slide one end of the twist tie into the plug wire connector and then reattach the plug wire to distributor cap. Space the twist tie ends as far apart form each other as possible, to prevent the spark from arcing across. Start the engine and let it stabilize. With a test light connected to a good ground; touch the test light probe to the end of the twist tie. That will short out the spark to ground. If when you short out a wire and there is no drop in rpm or change in the way the engine is running; you’ve found the cylinder(s).

Maybe perform a compression test on all cylinders.

Has there been any loss of coolant; even if only small amounts?
