May need to have that rebuilt to firm it up. Don't know your exact transmission, but many of them you can pull the top plate off without pulling the transmission, and it can be gone over at a reasonable cost. On many of these, there is a nylon 'cup' at the base of the shifter that wears and is easily replaced. You'll need to remove the shifter as Nick suggested.
