The top plate of the transmission has bushings, springs and such that guide everything while shifting and give it firmness. May need to have that rebuilt to firm it up. Don't know your exact transmission, but many of them you can pull the top plate off without pulling the transmission, and it can be gone over at a reasonable cost.

do all; Agree with Nick. On many of these, there is a nylon 'cup' at the base of the shifter that wears and is easily replaced. You'll need to remove the shifter as Nick suggested. Loren SW Washington

just pour some viagra in the gas tank and run it a few miles. Should firm up for a while. Seek help if it lasts longer than 4 hours.

Just a little mechanics' humor. Have you had a chance to work on the vehicle yet? Steve
