rover 200 electrics and everything else suddenly died Sign In

Hi I drive a 1998 Rover 200 kseries engine. Heres my problem.
About an hour ago I had to slam on my breaks (because of a police car) As soon as i stopped all the electronics on the car will not work, The oil and the battery light stay on even when the keys are out the ignition. I have tried disconecting and reconecting the battery but the problem persists. Obvious;y the engine wont start or even attempt to start.
Any advice would be greatly received.

im not familiar at all with land/range rovers but to me due to the circumstances you described sounds like the evasive braking might have tripped some sort of inertia switch controlling the fuel or ignition.

these are sometimes used to disable the vehicle in the event of a collision to prevent fire.

shamtul: Just a maybe:

Perhaps the battery shorted inside and just has the slightest trickle of life to allow for a tiny bulb to light now. If you checked the battery separately from the vehicle it would help pin this down.

Seems it all began with something unusual like a panic stop - alone that shouldn't cause it but could if something was weak to begin with.

As dmac suggested - many vehicles do use safety shut downs to prevent fires or more problems in case of an accident and that's still a possibility.

Another thought: Try taking a simple voltage reading at the battery and again at a power port. You may find it's all wrong which does suggest something shorted in the battery??

Thanks for the reply after checkin the battery i noticed the batterys negative earthing wire had snapped due to my sharp braking, the battery wasnt secured propperly so the force of stopping had caused the battery to move and snap the tight wire. after reconecting it everythin is working fine... Luckely the immoboliser didnt mess up and have to eb reseted.
Thanks for the help
