i have A 88 f250 5.0L i have been chasing down a intermittent rough idle and stumble on take off i have replaced the cap and rotor,, plugs and wires,, idle air motor and the TPS,, and 02 sensor (no converter) and the frame mounted fuel pump and fuel filter over the last two months each step seemed to help a little last year i replaced fuel pressure regulator and both fuel pumps and fuel pump relay previous owner had to run a toggle switch to fuel pump on frame i guss it was not getting power i still have the rough idle and stumble from time to time not always and the weather does not have an effect fuel pump still wired to toggle switch to work can not retrieve codes not even with a jumper wire oh poor millage and exhaust smells rich and have done the battery disconnect during each repair

Have you checked real good for vacuum leaks?
Is the check engine light on?

yes checked for leaks with carb cleaner and yes enine lite is on

Is that the original engine? Eng light on... should be spitting a code or two. What proceedure you using to get codes?

You might need to have it scanned with a regular OBD-1 scanner, I don't like doing the jumper wire thing.

Don't mean to break into this thread, but I have some information on something you should check out too.

One place you could check for problems that gave me a fit on an 87 F-150 was the ground connection near the battery. I'm not positive on the 88s, but there was a connector on the negative battery cable for the computer and fuel pump grounds near the battery. On this truck the engine would stumble at times or even shut off. The connection in the connector was all corroded causing high resistance for the pump and ECA ground. Bad grounds cause all sorts of wacky things. I just cut the connector off and spliced the wiring together with solder and heat shrink. Problem disappeared.

auto zone tried to pull codes with a plug n play tester we could not get any codes and then tried a jumper wire eng lite would not flash at all

i used a test lite as a jumper wire by hooking ground to battery and sticking test lite in the small gray connector with no luck

You can't do that with a Ford. The only way to get manual codes is a little tricky and you have to use one of those old analog voltmeters and count voltage sweeps.

good point i just looked at some some of the relay lugs and there really corroded and a small ground wire that runs from battery ground to finder is loose and there is another small wire that runs from battery ground to somewhere
i need to trace it and check other end

That one doesn't do flash the check engine light diagnotics. You either need an EEC IV code reader or you can use an analog volt meter or test lamp. If you use the analog volt meter/ test lamp you have to hook it up like this.

way beyond my skills volt meter sweeps yikes funny things is i have a nice old school volt meter oem tester in my flea market and dont know how they work

Hold onto that analog meter. They are really good for checking throttle position sensors and EGR lift sensors.

yeah i am rethinking why i put in my booth to sale its a really nice one weigh's about 10 lbs i am pulling off the market and learning how to use it

You can use your meter instead of the little light they showed in the video. Instead of watching a light bulb, you watch the sweep of the needle on the meter. Set your meter for 10-15 volts DC. You can use a jumper wire to jump the small grey connector to terminal 2 in the diagnostic connector instead of the code key.

oh by the way i replaced the toggle switch that prior owner installed for the fuel pump on the frame! i am gusseing that a wire went bad at some time and thats how they fixed it,, but anyway before truck started acting up if i shut the fuel pump toggle switch off the truck would die! and that's what should happen! but here in the last 2 months when i turned off fuel pump the truck would stay running and could drive it but lacked power,,,,kind just like it acts when its not running rite,,,,trucks seams to be running fine for now,,, i am thinking toggle switch was bad and not turning off all the way! and allowing low voltage to power pump even in off position and in the on position it was getting a little more voltage to run better but not fully,,,, now what do you guys think? am i way off on that theory!! i took old toggle switch apart and was very corroded on the inside

Previous owner might have installed it as a theft prevention device. An analog meter can be had for only $2.99 at Harbor Freight Tools this week. They come in handy and are the preferred tool occasionally. Man yer makin me feel old sayin that!

truck still running good after changing toggle switch and found out switch was installed as a repair for a bad harness wire,,,,, so i picked up what i beleave is a volt meter i had in my flea market booth now i am not to sure it is a volt meter i am posting a pic of it what is it and how do i use it ???

Nope, that's not a voltmeter. It appears to be a transistor tester. I would guess it is for repairing RF radios.
