rear drive shaft 05 escape limited Sign In

I left Ford yesterday afternoon with a diagnosis that my 05 escape limited with 78000 miles on it needs a new drive shaft for 1049 bucks plus tax. What should a new one coast me with a universal jt and hanger bearing. It's the rear. I think I am getting ripped off. Thanks Bonnie

Bonnie; It is very rare that a driveshaft must be replaced. Especially at such low mileage. If the u-joint went bad it is possible that it damaged the yoke on the shaft. It is not an inexpensive fix if this has happened, but 99% of the time, the driveshaft can be rebuilt much cheaper than replacing it. The yoke can be cut off, a new one welded on, and the shaft balanced. This must be done by a machine shop that does this type of work. We have several in our area and I'm sure with a bit of calling, you'll be able to find one, as well.
