Hi firstly thanks in advance for any help!

firsty the car
1999 golf gti turbo 1.8 AUG engine.
mileage 132k

right my problem lol

when driving above 10mph i get a kinda knocking its like a whoom whoom whoom whoom whoom but i can feel it through the pedals and steering wheel.

the faster i go the quicker it sounds so it goes with the wheel rotation.

also when i turn left or right it gets harder going straight its there but not so noticable.

I have had the bearings checked and there is very slight play in the passenger but none in the drivers (where it seems to be coming from)

I have changed he drive shafts and cv joints.
there was play in the steering arm and that was changed too.

Drivers side steering arm has a slight bend but very slight.

suspension seems tight.

bushes seem to be ok but its not that kind of knocking , its not a metal hitting metal kinda knock its a whoom knock?

also just on a side note when the wheels are up if you turn them one way and then quickly change to the other way the gearbox housing makes a light clonk, i was advised thats just where it suddenly changes direction but i was thinking can the diff cause these symptons?? accelrates fine and goes into gear fine.

I would really apprciate any help on this as i truly am at my wits end.

thanks

You may want to get a 2nd opinion here. From what you describe it sounds like a bad bearing. Turning to one side or the other shifts the weight of the car to one side putting more of a load on a bearing. If the bearing is bad the sound will get louder. If you turn to the left and the noise gets louder, you have a bad R bearing and visa versa.

Just a side note. Those are seal bearings preloaded with around 150 ft lbs. If there is any play at all in the bearing....it's bad.
At the minimum this needs at least one bearing.....

Also bad tires can make a similar noise, rotate the tires to see if that makes a difference
