power steering Sign In

I have a 1998 mercury V-6 sable and randomly the steering wheel becomes hard to turn,it did it a few times last year and today was the first time this year. When this happens it becomes very hard to make a turn, but with out doing anything it would be OK the next turn.We do not notice anything else that happens. Thanks

Checl the Transmission Range sensor. It is also called the Neutral Safety Switch or the Manual Lever Positioning Switch. Believe it or not, Ford runs a lot of grounds through that switch and the Power Steering Pressure Switch is one of them. They are easily replaced. Click here for information on changing it out.

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Ideas: Make sure any greasable front end parts are greased. May or may not have any - some replacement parts may!

Check that belt tension is ok and fluid is full too.

Some of these have shown breakdown of the fluid making it sticky and changing it can stop the problem if that's the problem,

Re: power steering Sign In

I have replaced the transmission range sensor with new from the dealer and I still have the same problem. This is my wife's car,and this is the first time this has happened to me.I noticed the battery light came on just for a second as I was making a turn and I heard a short noise like a belt, and again the steering was very hard to turn. What does the battery light and the hard steering have in common? It looks like this only happens when making a turn then it will be its OK.I'm not going to let my wife drive this until I know it is fix. Thanks for any help

BELT TENSION! It may be at the end of the range for self adjustment. It's a maybe but a slipping belt could cause PS issues AND cause an battery/alternator light to come on. You shouldn't be able to turn the pulley of alternator by hand (engine off pleaseCrazy) and you'd need to mark adjusting pulley - then remove belt and see if there was any room left to self adjust,
