polo glow plug removal!

Hi, having a bit of hassle trying to remove my glow plus in my 1998 1.9 polo. Changing them looks easy, if I were able to get a spanner to the nuts. The manual doesn't say anything about the difficulty of getting to the nuts to remove the glow plugs - the pictures look like the engine has been lifted out of the bonnet to make it possible.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there a way round it (e.g. special spanners, which can maneuver into awkward spaces)? Thanks, Paul.
