please can you help me? Sign In

I have just returned from having my 1997 chyrsler sebring con checked out. The bad news is the abs system is shot. They tell me that it is impossible to get the complete replacement for it. They said it is the abs mod. and lines a bulk steel and need replacing. I am beside my self. I am in my 70's and love this car. Can someone please tell me who to call or any info would be great.

who told you that? just out of curiosity,if I can get parts for vehicles made in the 70s I know for sure they carry parts for 97.......let me check back with you and see what I can find.

That system can be replaced from what I have seen, but I would get a second opinion first.

To add: --justme: Parts are available. It's only 11 years old. As for the lines if you really needed every inch of every brake line this car must be so rusted it's junk now! They are a pill to make up from dirt cheap metal line and most flare nuts can be reused. Sections can be bad and new sections put it where they rust out.

As for the ABS: Check and see if it's even a requirement where you live to fix that. The vehicles that have that are designed to default to regular brakes like all cars had not all that long ago.

Check out used parts also. Yes - some electronic stuff is pricey for this and used should be very resonable - check with local salvage yards and techs willing to work with used parts.

Do fix leaks in brake lines! That's a real safety concern. The ABS is a crap shoot as to whether it will help or not in assorted emergency braking situations??

I live in western mass. do I need the abs? If not is it a problem taking it out? the place my husband is a crysler dealer and I am going to find another place to take it for a second look

Massachusetts - ABS: The last time I checked you are not required to have operational ABS in this state. I have obtained MANY legit state inspection stickers with vehciles built with ABS new and the light blaring indicating they will not operate in ABS mode but are otherwise fine. These vehicles have been newer than 1995 and the state's system is matched up to the vehicle with direct data and the input of the technician on other observed items. So much as a recently disconnected battery will fail the vehicles or rather make you go back later when it can communicate with vehicle. Big brother really is watching!

You could check at www.mass.gov/rmv and somewhere in that mess of a site it's also said that it won't fail an inspection sticker based on lack of ABS - (BRAKES MUST WORK PROPERLY OTHERWISE OF COURSE)

Commentary: WELCOME TO TAXA, RUSTA,CHUSETTS! LOL! The vehicles rust more here than snowier VT, NH and most of ME. That is simply because we use mega tons of salt and just a few degrees colder in the more northern NE states it doesn't help and some folks actually know how to drive a car! Sub note: Went to school in CO where it sure does snow but salt is illegal to use on roads (coal slag instead) and cars don't rust near as bad.

Brake's metal lines and fuel lines take a hard hit with rust and can blow right out causing no effective braking and should be checked for that. The line is sold by the yard dirt cheap, flare nut ends if not reusable are available and this is routinely done here. Shops that have techs that don't deal with this must not be from "round here!"

It's not that easy to make up these lines to fit perfectly so they don't rub anything as they are bent-to-fit for the section(s) that are bad. It complicates because bleeding out brakes will frequently find rusted bleeders that require that item to be replaced so it can get expensive - so does plowing into the car in front of you when your brakes fail!

I have been involved in cases where ABS WAS THE SOLE CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS on dry roads when ABS prevented normal braking action, pedal vibrated to the floor and collision happened - RTE 20 Wayland, MA with a 93 S-10 Blazer with the failed brakes. Case settled out of court. I drove the vehcile after body repair and it took a while but did it to me in testing - no warning or rust involved with this vehicle at the time and owner refused to drive it again and was traded in with that history and lost contact on the vehicle or the case thereafter.

I've been asked to remove ABS as in on purpose from vehicles but refuse to do so. Others might. Leaving them just broken has been legal and fine as long as default braking action is working properly.

Can you lead me to someone in the in the springfied area that may be able to help me? Have to add brake fluid about 1-3 times per week.

Sorry that I don't know anyone in the Springfield area - since about 1980! This isn't safe to let go like it is no matter what it takes.

Any decent shop can take care of this and I know you are worried about that. Ask around - try asking at a parts store that deals with mechanics mostly - some will suggest who they like. If nothing else call AAA of Southern New England to refer you to a shop they recommend. AAA will support YOU if things don't seem right.

You need a mechanic and should get to know one. Introduce yourself and meet the person who will be working on your car. This means the world to techs to know who they are really working for - not just a # on a repair order. If you are happy with the work let the tech now and the owners! Be up front and know what this will cost and how it will be done.

Right now I can't suggest you drive this car at all until fixed. Please do something with this asap,

since your saying your adding brake fluid so much, you obviously have a leak somewhere and your pumping air into the system. thats probably why the abs modulator is acting up because its probably air bound.

Thanks for the reply. My husband has taken the car to several places and they all say they can't get the parts needed. I believe that I found refurbished online. I am going to print it out and bringit to our mechanic and hopefuly he will do it for us. Will let you know how I make out.
