paraflu engine coolant question Sign In

My coolant level needs topping up, and the handbook recommends only using paraflu. if i topped it up with a generic brand of coolant/antifreeze from halfords, is this likely to cause a problem? I have asked on other forums, and people give conflicting adivce, from its fine, to saying that it will cause the fluid to "gel up" and break my engine.

Thanks

I couldn't find the chemical make up of the brand name "Paraflu" engine antifreeze/coolant so you may need to read containers.

Most are "Ethylene/Glycol" based with specific additives for corrosion control. Pure "EG" products are intended to mix with water to a desired freeze protection level achieved generally by using a 50/50 mix.

Some car makers will specify their own brand of products pretty much made of the same base. If so, topping off with another brand would be fine still maintaining the product and water mix. Aftermarket products should state on container what they are compatible with. Some original products will use a dye to identify their product but essentially could be identical.

Some engines need a higher level of anti-corrosion additives to protect from corrosion.

I suggest reading the container and if need be contact the manufacturer for compatibility as I can't find the chemical make up and if the same simply adding some shouldn't be any problem.

THE REAL ISSUE is WHY did it need any at all? So called "water cooled" engines are NOT designed to consume antifreeze/coolants so it's important to know why (leak?) it went,

T
