my truck has a p0118 code coolant temp circuit high imput anyone know what this means. my truck is a 99 s10 with a 4.3 it surges during cold weather but runs fine when it is warm. also the temp gauge isn't coming up

Simply the PCM has detected a -36* coolant temp. reading from the ECT. In order for the MIL to come on this test has had to fail in 2 consecutive drive cycles. You can start by checking the radiator and make sure the coolant is full. Let the vehicle sit overnight and do the following check. Do not start the engine, it has to be cold for this test. Unplug the ECT sensor. It is located on the driver's side cylinder head, rear of engine. Between the 3 and 5 spark plug. It is a 2 wire sensor.Take a digital multimeter set to the highest ohm scale. Put the probes on the 2 pins in the sensor. If the resistance is between 60000-100000 the sensor is returning a temp reading between -30* and -40*. Replace sensor. After replacing the sensor start vehicle and test drive. The MIL will still be on. If the problem is fixed, the ECT sensor test has to run and pass on 3 consecutive drive cycles for the PCM to turn off the MIL. The code will be in history for an additional 40 key cycles. If the test passes on all key cycles, the PCM will clear the code and its data from all memory. Post back and let us know how it goes.
