I just purchased a snow plow truck, 79 Scottsdale, 350 sm. block is out of a 86, I think? has 4 bbl carb, i adjusted the timing thinking it was off a bit, truck ccranks and starts, but at idle, in park or in drive it rattles the mirrors off, of the doors, revving the engine a bit makes the rattle almost disappear???? as the engine slows back to idle, it shakes the mirrors, again, i drove this truck 150 plus miles to my home, it overheated, due to the plow on the front, and the missing fan shroud, i plowed with it once, with no pproblems, the week after I plowed again, finished up the job, then it started this rattle BS, any advice??????? Thanks

This isn't in order of your question, but a couple of things popped out at me. 1. Did you use a timing light to 'adjust' the timing; If it is over-advanced, that can cause over-heating and a pre-ignition knock.
2. You need that fan shroud when driving at lower speeds, such as snow-plowing. I would think it would get enough air flow at freeway speeds, even with the plow in front. If not, you may want to add an electric cooling fan which will work at any speed.
Hopefully, the engine didn't get hot enough to cause any damage. (small block Chevs like to crack the heads at the valve seats, but generally quite tough. Get all of the ignition settings back where they belong. Set the timing, air/fuel ratio, then idle speed (in that order).
Of course, if you haven't already done it, check all of the vital fluids. Can you describe the rattle any better? Is it just a 'rattle' because the idle speed is low, engine running rough, or is it an internal engine rattle?

Pepper ---- Put the tune-up settings to spec as Loren suggested - not just a fiddle with the timing type thing. Any plow truck will overheat on the highway if you go fast or at least turn plow at extreme angle as the air pocket behind it can't cool when it's freezing out even. Run heater full blast and open windows if need be. That's a long ride with a plow and if that is to happen too often or in Summer take it off and put it in the back.

lemmmme guess - the shrowd is missing to make room for an hydraulic pump - right? Get another one and cut it to make room - they help tons.

The running poorly was probably a result of overheating with a local use old engine. Plain tune up stuff may do it and fix any vacuum leaks,
