oil spill all over my engine Sign In

Hey guys! I don't know a lot about cars or car care so I need some help!
The other day I went into a service station to get my oil checked. The young guy who filled it for me didn't put the oil cap back on, and by the time I got home I had smoke pouring out of the hood and the oil I had just paid for spilled all over the engine and everywhere else. I was soo mad and now I'm afraid to drive the car. I want to go back into the service station and make them pay for this. I expect to get the oil filled up again for no charge, but my dad wants me to make them pay for an engine shampoo. He says it needs to get cleaned up or I'll smell burning oil from now on whenever I drive. How much will an engine shampoo cost? And how do I make the service station take responsibility and pay for it?? Thanks for the help!!

For right now don't drive the car until the cap is back on and you know the level is in the safe range!!!!

Never mind just the mess, this could 86 the whole engine! Cleaning off the engine should be done very carefully. More problems come from blasting high pressure water and degreaser into electronic stuff than the oil itself. Your call on how to get it cleaned up but it should be carefully done and not with a hot engine,

Re: oil spill all over my engine Sign In

It’s not all that big a deal; so the attendant made a mistake. Call the manager/owner of the service station and tell him/her what has happened. If they have the slightest hint of the meaning SERVICE they’ll look after their mistake.
Notice how I said mistake a couple of times, everyone makes them and most of us will own up to them. Go and talk to them; in a civil, mature but firm tone and ask not tell them what are they going to do about this.
Like Tom said, check the oil level, top it up, stick a cap back on and drive the thing down to the service station and show them.
Maybe let the engine idle in the driveway for a bit, until most of the oil is burnt off the exhaust and the smoke has lessened; then you’re good to go. Look at it this way for the price of a litre of oil you’ve got the under hood of your car rust proofed. LOL
As for cleaning the engine & engine compartment, again not a big deal; a half-hours worth of time and a little soap & water applied correctly and it’ll look like new again. The people at the service station would have to be complete jerks not to make this right with you for the small amount of cost.

Re: oil spill all over my engine Sign In

Hi, This happened to me, too, yesterday. I just discovered it. All of the oil is out of car on my driveway. There is none in the engine, but plenty all over under the hood.

1. The worst of it is, I drove home 20 miles yesterday. Hopefully, the engine won't freeze this quickly? I will fill it up again with oil today.

2. Will alternator or other things be destroyed by the oil blown all over them?

The mechanic who left off the cap was just taking a look at the car for me. He wasn't officially doing work, so I don't want to get him in trouble.

Help!

Top up the oil, put a cap back on, mop up what you can with some rags and fire it up. If oil has got into the alternator or whatever; you’ve a fifty/fifty chance that is been damaged? If it has been damaged the damage is done so running the engine now, isn’t going to hurt anything else. As for any engine damage the same goes and you won’t know if it is hurt until you run it. Watch the oil pressure gauge or warning light and listen for noises (knocking) coming from the engine.
If all looks/sounds good drive it.

Thank you very much, Dan. Have put in oil and trying to get up the umph to go deal with the rest. Will let you know how it turns out. If I have to get alternator rebuilt or buy one, how much do they run. 1990 Toyota Corolla with only 110,000 miles on it. Katherine
