odmeter quit working and transmission wont shift

i have a 99 pontiac while driving the odmeter quick and the transmission will not shift and check engine light came on. what could be the problem

If you can,start by getting a code reading.
Check engine light is on,code(s) should be stored.
Stop at Autozone or any major parts chain and they'll read them for free.
Post the codes and we can go from there.
